“You treat people how you want to be treated, and your life will be good. Treat people with respect.” This is Karen DeLong’s favorite mantra, and this philosophy permeates in her personal and work life in how she works with her family, colleagues and clients.

Karen worked as a Customer Service Representative for a company printing magazines, books, and fliers before joining Riekes Packaging in 2017 in a similar role.  In that year, the company became part of the MJS Packaging family. With all her experience dealing with different people, she knows firsthand the importance of anticipating customers’ needs.  

How Karen Handles Customer Service Across Different Industries

At MJS Packaging, Karen closely works with the food, spirits, and beauty industries, which she was not familiar with until she joined the company. However, as she progressed in her career, she made connections with her clients and grew her relationships with them. With time, she also came to appreciate the hard work and dedication needed to make packaging products a success.

From a Phone Call to the Finished Product

Helping customers through the process of packaging is the core of Karen’s job. It all starts with a phone call from a customer asking for help with packaging – bottles, caps, liners, etc. Karen helps them with it and oversees choosing the packaging, coordinating with the customer to get the contents to the filler, and finally having a finished product.  

Karen loves helping customers and relieving pressure by taking care of the details and doing the heavy lifting for them. ” I enjoy my customers. I have a good time!” says Karen. She doesn’t mind the challenging work because she finds it exciting and fun.

Restrategizing Customer Service During the Covid-19 Pandemic

During the Covid-19 pandemic, there were problems with resin shortages, long lead times, labor shortages, and price increases. During this time, Karen’s proactive and creative attitude helped her get through the challenges. She did it by rethinking what the customer needed during this difficult time.

The Covid-19 pandemic is not the only challenge Karen faces. One time, she had a customer who periodically ordered several packaging components from a specific supplier, but he couldn’t get what he needed from them. He called and Karen sprung into action and found reasonable substitutes for his needs. He was so impressed and appreciative of her work that he went beyond all his original orders and bought extra stock.

Injecting The Fun Into Work: All About Karen DeLong

Mark Twain said, “Find a job you like, and you never have to work a day in your life.” Karen enjoys her job and makes it fun for her and everyone around her. 

Her positivity and enthusiasm are contagious, and it touches everybody she works with. Her colleagues in all her workplaces look forward to her pleasant personality every day.

Karen has a great outlook on life and believes in balancing the good with the bad. She loves going on 20-30 mile bike rides with her husband to keep a positive attitude, clear her head, and release those feel-good endorphins.

Success is Family 

Success is measured differently for everyone. For Karen, success is a loving, close-knit family – her husband, her children, and her adorable granddaughter, who recently turned one. With a job she loves and a family she adores, Karen truly is thriving and happy. This enthusiasm in all aspects of her life makes her an excellent customer service representative and a valued team member of MJS Packaging.
