Materials used for Different Types of Bottles

Bottles for various uses are typically made of a specific kind of plastic or glass. Metal is not commonly used for packaging. Among the materials used to for different bottles are:

· PET or PETE – Polyethylene Terephthalate is a clear, lightweight form of plastic, popular with beverage makers and for bottled water, oil and some pharmaceutical products. They carry the recycling SPI code of 1.

· HDPE – High Density Polyethylene is also used as food and household items containers and comes with an SPI code of 2.

· PVC – Polyvinyl chloride is used for many liquids, but not food items. It carries the SPI code of 3.

· LDPE – Low Density Polyethylene is lightweight and flexible, not used so much for containers as for plastic wraps, sandwich bags and squeezable bottles. It carries an SOI code of 4 and is recyclable in certain places.

· PP – Polypropylene is a strong plastic often used for boxes, containers, some prescription bottles and margarine and yoghurt containers. It has the SPI code of 5.

· Other – This comprises a range of different plastics including polycarbonate and polyactide, which may be difficult to recycle and carried the SPI code of 7.

· Glass used for bottles is of two kinds – soda-lime glass and lead crystal glass or cut glass. Soda-lime glass is commonly used for all bottles while lead crystal glass may be used for some premium fragrances.
