Here is how we are making it easy to get the right spirits bottle closures among the many options out there.

A Wide Array of Spirits Bottle Closures

Get to know your options. This is the first step we recommend to our craft distillery audience. There are a few different types of widely used spirits bottle closures, but they can appear and perform in a variety of ways. These closure types include:

Each of these closures is specialized in function and appearance. Some exist because they are specialized to be used with certain types of contents while others are designed for ease of use or safety. Like the glass spirits bottles they accompany, all can be customized and decorated to provide an optimal shelf-appeal for your brand.

Factors for Choosing the Right Closure

Beyond the initial discussion of goals, objectives, and preferences that will factor into your decision, we can help you consider the importance of industry standards and best practices. Here are some key pieces of information to consider about each type of available closure.

Screw-top closures: As perhaps the least complicated of the closure options, a screw-top is fairly self-explanatory. The cap unscrews, typically breaking from the ring on the neck of the bottle, and easily screws back on if the consumer wants to provide a basic reseal on the leftover product.

Bar-top closures: Bar-top closures include a flat or domed cap and stopper. The stopper can be made from natural or technical/synthetic cork and the closures are typically treated to help with the insertion and extraction of the cork from the bottle. The cap can be made from any number of media including glass, wood, plastic, and metal.

With bar-top closures, there is an endless number of decorating options to help tie in the uniqueness of any brand. However, we strongly recommend supplying a bottle drawing to the closure manufacturer so you get the ideal fit.  It is important for the manufacturer to get this visual and get a solid understanding of the bottle contents. Some pressurized contents have greater potential to pop the closure and are therefore not safe for this closure type.

Roll-On, Pilfer Proof (ROPP) closures: The main advantage of ROPP closures is optimal tamper-evident protection for your product. ROPP closures are most commonly used with wine bottles, in conjunction with a cork, but they are also used as spirits bottle closures. The use of this closure can be combined with a screw-top, a shrink band, and other options as well.

Swing-top closures: Swing-top closures, made for swing-top bottles, are most commonly used with beer, but you may also see them used with specialty food products like olive oils.
